In our hectic world, our bodies need a break every now and then. The Vagus Flatterer is a simple yet incredibly effective exercise that stimulates your vagus nerve. This nerve is the key to greater relaxation, regeneration, and inner balance.
What exactly is the vagus nerve? It’s part of your parasympathetic nervous system—responsible for the “rest and digest” mode. Through targeted touch, you can activate it and bring your body and mind back into balance.
How the vagus flatterer works
- Starting position:
Sit comfortably or stand in a relaxed position. Breathe deeply to bring yourself into focus. - Gentle touch:
Place both hands on your face so that your fingertips lightly touch your skin. - Gently stroke downward:
Let your hands glide slowly along your throat. With light pressure, move along your esophagus, down toward your solar plexus (upper abdomen). - Stroke the hips:
Gently stroke the hips as if you were releasing tension. - Raise your arms as you inhale:
Gently raise your arms until your hands touch above your head. - As you exhale, return:
Let your hands glide over your face, neck, and stomach, then stroke your hips again. - 10 repetitions and reflection:
Repeat the movement about 10 times. Then take a moment to reflect:- How does your heartbeat feel?
- Is your breathing calmer?
- Has your muscle tension changed?
Why the exercise is so valuable
- Calms your nervous system: You activate the vagus nerve, which puts you into relaxation mode.
- Releases tension: Gentle touch can release tension in your body.
- Promotes your well-being: Your heart rate slows down, stress hormones are reduced, and you feel more balanced overall.
- Easy to implement: You can do the exercise anytime and anywhere – whether after a stressful day or as a daily ritual.
