How Polarity Therapy and Somatic Experiencing can help
Test anxiety is a widespread phenomenon that can affect people of all ages. It often manifests in symptoms such as nervousness, insomnia, concentration problems, or even physical ailments. In this article, as a certified complementary therapist and Somatic Experience Practitioner, I would like to demonstrate how Polarity Therapy and Somatic Experiencing (SE) can not only relieve anxiety but also restore inner balance. I will also present practical exercises and valuable resources that can help you or your clients successfully manage exam stress.
1. Understanding test anxiety – A look at the roots
Test anxiety is often more than just stage fright. It develops when stress takes over and the nervous system enters a state of hyperarousal. In this “fight-or-flight” mode, the sympathetic nervous system dominates. The result? The body focuses on survival instead of cognitive performance like learning or recalling knowledge.
Somatic Experiencing describes this condition as the result of an overtaxed nervous system. It is a form of “emotional trauma” in which old or new stress patterns are reactivated. Polarity therapy views test anxiety as an energetic blockage that inhibits the free flow of life energy. Dr. Randolph Stone, the founder of Polarity therapy, stated: “Life is energy in motion.”
2. Polarity therapy: harmonizing energy flows
Polarity therapy is based on five pillars:
- Energetic bodywork
- Polarity Yoga
- Nutrition
- Therapeutic conversation
- Mindfulness
Energetic bodywork
Polarity therapists use targeted touch to release blockages and harmonize the flow of energy in the body. For exam anxiety, treatment often focuses on the solar plexus, considered the emotional center, and the throat region, which represents communication.
Polarity Yoga
Gentle movements and breathing techniques promote grounding and release tension. A proven exercise is the neutral squatting position, which not only opens the hips but also strengthens self-awareness.
The therapeutic conversation
During the consultation, the therapist explores not only the patient’s life circumstances but also the underlying emotional patterns. Test anxiety is viewed as an energetic imbalance that manifests itself in both the body and the mind.
3. Somatic Experiencing: Regulating the Nervous System
Somatic Experiencing complements Polarity Therapy by focusing on the self-regulation of the nervous system. The goal is to perceive and gradually release the stress energies stored in the body.
The role of the body in coping with anxiety
Test anxiety often leads to physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, or heart palpitations. SE helps to understand and regulate these reactions as natural defense mechanisms. Clients are guided to “titrate in small steps,” meaning to process the stress in manageable portions.
4. The power of silence – finding connection to inner peace
One of the most powerful aspects of polarity therapy is working with silence. Silence allows the client to reach a state of self-awareness in which blockages often dissolve on their own.
Exercise for silence:
- Sit in a quiet place and close your eyes.
- Place your hands on your solar plexus and breathe deeply.
- Stay still and observe your thoughts and feelings.
- Let go of everything that holds you back and enjoy the peace that arises.
5. Practical exercises for exam anxiety
Polarity breathing technique
- Place one hand on your forehead and the other on your solar plexus.
- Breathe deeply and imagine fresh energy flowing through your body.
- Breathe out and let go of the fear.
Somatic Experiencing: Pendulum exercise
- Remember a situation in which you felt safe.
- Feel in your body what this security feels like.
- Gently return to the sensations that trigger test anxiety without overexerting yourself.
6. Experience reports and research results
Studies prove the effectiveness of polarity therapy and SE:
- A study on polarity therapy showed that 80% of participants reported a significant reduction in stress and anxiety.
- Somatic Experiencing has proven particularly effective in the treatment of stress-related disorders by promoting self-regulation of the nervous system.
7. Valuable resources for those affected
In addition to working with a therapist, other resources may also be helpful:

Use exam anxiety as an opportunity
Test anxiety can be challenging, but it also offers an opportunity for inner development. Combining Polarity Therapy and Somatic Experiencing can release energetic blockages, calm the nervous system, and develop a deeper understanding of one’s own patterns. With these approaches, those affected can not only overcome their fear but also look to the future with strength and confidence.
