Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented approach to treating trauma and stress. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, it is based on the observation that animals in the wild are rarely traumatized despite constant threat. They possess natural mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high energies of a survival response.
In humans, however, these energies can remain “frozen” in the nervous system if their natural release is blocked. This leads to a variety of symptoms such as physical pain, emotional overwhelm, or chronic stress. SE supports the gentle release of these blocked energies and the rebalancing of the nervous system.
